 abstract={Tourist guidebooks are one of the oldest forms of literatura periegetica already known in antiquity. Although, in Poland the tradition of writing them is much shorter, it dates back as far as to the turn of 16th and 17th centuries. The 19th century was the beginning of new guidebooks created according to modern criteria, i.e. not only did they include description of a given place, but also some practical information and suggested sightseeing routes. The purpose of this article is to discuss the roots of Polish guidebook literature and to point out the significance of guidebooks as a historical source regarding tourism.},
