This paper analyses the scientific study of the light industry development in the Ukrainian provinces of the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX and early XX centuries as described by pre-Soviet, Soviet and Ukrainian historiographers. This thesis is mostly focused on finding out their attitude towards the policy of the Russian Empire in the industrial sphere. The available scientific literature is divided into thematic groups; the most significant static monographs and monographic research have been identified for analysis, and the key content lines have been indicated on the unexposed problems. The common and distinctive features of the historians’ assessments of the specifics of light industry development in the mentioned period have been determined. The influence of state policy on the level of competitiveness of Ukrainian industrial products on the Russian market is presented within this paper. The authors’ relation regarding the change of the political course of the state in the Soviet period (in the early 1990s) is presented, as are their careful attempts to elaborate on the works of their predecessors. Additionally, these controversial issues are determined, as it should be, based on the application of a new methodological framework during the study of this economic problem. The main groups of historiographic sources concerning the history of light industry in Dnieper Ukraine of that time were found, systematized and characterized. A set of aspects, which is insufficiently researched, is highlighted. This problem requires systematic study. A modern vision of the mentioned problem in Ukrainian historical science during the age of independence is revealed. Common and distinctive features of the assessments of the specifics of foreign trade of the specified period, and the influence of state policy on the level of competitiveness of industrial products on the world market are determined. On the basis of the analysis of several scientific sources and the interpretation of scientific literature concerning light industry development, an attempt is made to identify and describe features of how light industry factories were supplied with technical equipment, raw materials, engineering specialists, and workers from the Ukrainian provinces in the second half of the XIX and early XX centuries. It is emphasized that, in spite of the importance and urgency, this problem was not sufficiently emphasized in the historical literature. Moreover, a sufficient number of sources in historiography has accumulated. The necessary methods for its scientific reconstruction are developed on a modern methodological basis.

У статті проаналізовано стан наукового вивчення питань розвитку легкої промисловості українських губерній Російської імперії другої половини ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. дорадянськими, радянськими та сучасними українськими історіографами. Основну увагу акцентовано на з’ясуванні їх ставлення до політики Російської імперії у сфері промисловості. Наявну наукову літературу розподілено на тематичні групи; для аналізу виділено найбільш значні статейні, монографічні дослідження, означено їх ключові змістові лінії та вказано на маловивчені проблеми. Визначено спільні та відмінні риси оцінок істориками специфіки розвитку легкої промисловості вказаного періоду, впливу державної політики на рівень конкурентоспроможності української промислової продукції на всеросійському ринку. Констатовано залежність позиції авторів від зміни політичного курсу держави в радянський період, на початку 1990-х рр., їх намагання ретельно опрацьовувати праці попередників, а також визначатися з контроверсійними питаннями на основі застосування нової методологічної бази, які потребують відповіді у ході дослідження цієї економічної проблеми. Виявлено, систематизовано та охарактеризовано основні групи історіографічних джерел з історії легкої промисловості Наддніпрянської України зазначеної доби. Виділено комплекс недостатньо досліджених та дискусійних аспектів проблеми, що потребують системного вивчення. Розкрито особливості сучасного бачення зазначеної проблематики в українській історичній науці доби незалежності. Визначено спільні та відмінні риси оцінок специфіки зовнішньої торгівлі вказаного періоду, впливу державної політики на рівень конкурентоспроможності промислової продукції на світовому ринку. На основі аналізу низки наукових джерел, а також осмислення наукової літератури з питань розвитку легкої промисловості зроблено спробу виділити та охарактеризувати особливості забезпечення технічним обладнанням, сировиною, інженерними фахівцями, робітниками підприємств легкої промисловості українських губерній у другій половині ХІХ – на початку ХХ ст. Підкреслено, що, незважаючи на важливість та актуальність, проблема поки що вичерпно не розкрита в історичній літературі. Щоправда, в історіографії нагромаджено достатню кількість джерел і вироблено необхідний інструментарій для її наукової реконструкції на сучасній методологічній основі.
